Goals and goal setting can bring a sense of meaning and purpose to your life, but success doesn’t always come easy.

Whether you’re trying to lose weight or learn a new language, you are likely to encounter obstacles big and small that can make your goals seem unreachable. There’s a good reason 92% of people don’t stick to the goals they set at the new year: It’s hard work!

But the feeling of satisfaction from setting goals and achieving them is unmatched. So whether your goals are big or small, short-term or long, here are seven steps to help you reach them:

Step 1: Decide on a goal.

The first step for success in goal setting is to simply decide on your goal. Whether you aim high or start small, choose one (just one!) to focus on. It should be something that is important to you — important enough that you’re willing to work for it!

Step 2: Put it on paper.

Writing down your goal increases the likelihood that you’ll stick with it. Take your time with this; it’s an important step. Make it specific (“I want to run an 8-minute mile” rather than “I want to be a better runner”), frame it in positive terms (Not “I don’t want to be overweight anymore,” but “I want to lose 30 pounds”), and set a timeline (“I want to lose 30 pounds by June”).

Step 3: Tell a friend.

Like writing it down, sharing with your friends and family members increases the chances you’ll stick with it. You’re no longer just accountable to yourself, but to them, too!

Step 4: Break it down into smaller goals.

Divide your goal into small, measurable increments — this is especially important for big, long-term goals. Collecting smaller wins along the way will help keep you motivated. Step 5: Plan your first step.

They say every journey starts with a single step, and it’s the same with goal setting. Figure out what your first move will be. If you don’t even know where to start, your first step could be researching where to start! If your goal is weight loss, stock up on healthy snacks so you’re not tempted to reach for a bag of chips in a moment of weakness.

Step 6: Keep at it.

There will almost certainly be moments when you feel like giving up — like you’ll never achieve your goal. Power through it! Step 7: Celebrate!

Acknowledge your hard work and reward yourself. Then it’s on to the next goal!
